INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMME 8
ABSTRACT PANORAMA
Friday 24 August 5pm

Abstract animation is a rich, challenging element of the overall creative animation picture. In some cases these films utilise the most elemental components of cinema – light, colours, the simple intrigue of making a collection of still images ‘move’. Abstract animation can sometimes ask a lot of its audience but the rewards flow from experiencing works that go beyond what words and narrative can create.

Passing By
Huan Chen, USA, 1’00
A deceptively simple, enormously enjoyable short tribute to the scratch film technique.

Sequence of Itinerary
Po Kuang Chen, Taiwan, 5’00
A futuristic and multi dimensional swarm of trails, ribbons and clusters cleverly evoking a sense both of space, distance and compressed claustrophobia.

Paths of G
Dietmar Offinhuber, Austria, 1’30
A walking inspection down the line of a collection of frames from Stanley Kubrick’s ‘Paths of Glory’.

La Petite Illusion
Michaela Schwentner, Austria, 3’45
A collection of reconstructed cinematic imagery inspired by the unique visuality of damaged digital formats.

Lajka’s Memory
Eva Toth, Hungary, 4’00
An abstract animated tribute to an abstract artist. A rich, diverse cavalcade of symbols, visual samples and cut & paste displays.

Circle
Laurie Gibbs, UK, 3’25
This film explodes the myriad ways a circular motif can be incorporated into a piece of moving visual art.

30 Ways to Walk
Jeff Gill, USA, 1’00
Complex manipulations of photographic grains, effects and styles depicting the simplest of human activities.

Daydream Mechanics V
Jean Detheux, Canada, 12’15
A living, breathing, almost overwhelming digital kaleidoscope passionately inspired by the music of Michael Oesterle.

SX80 bh
Ricardo Mehedff, Brazil, 5’00
A continual montage of shards of fractured, out-of- tune, faltering TV images.

Morning Lemon
Daan Spruijt, France, 9’00
A taut blend of genetic mutation juxtaposed against the imagined breakdown of a relationship.

Stratification Expatiate
Michael Salkeld, UK, 4’00
Ever changing geometric visual imagery with a nod to the science and art of architecture.

Clapping Pictures
Annie Vandergeeten, Belgium, 5’25
A gorgeous geometric homage to Steve Reich’s minimalist composition.

The Aroma of Tea
Michael Dudok De Wit, UK/Holland, 3’25
A sumptuous short film entirely painted with tea. A small shape travels purposefully and rhythmically towards its final destination.

Furry Flurry
Martinus Klemet, Estonia, 3’30
A 60’s space-age film incorporating Russian propaganda posters.

Whirr
Timo Katz, Germany, 2’15
A landscape animation which captures the tension between repetitions of form in a suburban housing estate.
